KAN Leadership Awards

We have an extremely generous community. People here are very involved in the community, whether that's making it look better, cleaning it up, collecting items for those in need or jumping into action when others need help.

The KAN Annual Leadership Awards Luncheon celebrated that - The top individuals in Bakersfield who have made a difference. It's a beautiful event, and my director is on the board. I attended last year, and was excited to return this year. There were a few others from our office who went, so I carpooled with a couple of my colleagues.

We had a reserved table which felt very fancy. There was a buffet lunch setup, so we got in line rather quickly, then ate and mingled - talking summer plans and such at our table. Then, the event started. The Boys & Girls Club sang the National Anthem, we did the Pledge of Allegiance and they serenaded us with another song. They are incredibly talented and it's such a treat to hear from them!

Hearing about these individuals and organizations that are in our own backyard was so inspiring. I remember walking away last year ready to take on the world and volunteer for everything. This year was no different. I came back to the office and started researching some of the organizations I'd heard about and searching other topics that I'm passionate about, like the history of our community with our local museum, the Woman's Club of Kern County (where the event was held) and literacy here in Bakersfield.

I decided to become a member of our Kern County Museum, which I'm very excited about. It played such a pivotal role in my childhood, with field trips to the museum with my grandparents, family friends and sometimes with school groups. I was always fascinated with the history and lifestyles of time periods long before I came around, and seeing all these old pioneer cabins and Victorian homes that represented those eras.

Now that I am a member, I can't wait to plan a visit and have another little something to do on one of these Fridays.

If you're looking for a sign, this is it, to get involved with your community or give back in some capacity. Volunteer and give your time, give your money...Whatever resources are available to you can make a difference in the overall picture.

That's all for now,

Shelby
