Fourth of July Weekend
And yet, it still feels like it went by too fast. Back to the normal routine, a couple days in the office for events this week and not another holiday off until Labor Day in September.
Overall, the weekend was pretty uneventful. I was sick all of last week with a terrible sore throat and a bit of a cough, aches, all of it. Thursday just felt like a day to relax but with a festive flare. Since we can’t do much with our dog, Rory, we haven’t made plans the last few years. I watched TODAY and we had Mickey waffles (I added blue and white sprinkles to mine) and just had a chill morning. (And, of course, this was the time that my aunt and uncle asked us to come over to watch fireworks with them and their grandkids).
I got ready, put on my shirt with stars and stripes, put on makeup and felt decent for the first time in several days. I did some light reading and tried to start watching the Meghan Markle Fourth of July Hallmark movie from a few years back. It was very cheesy even for Hallmark, and I didn’t get around to finishing it. But, here are a couple words for you: Patriotic wedding. And it was her ex marrying her best friend. None of it made any sense. It was entertaining, if only for the comedic factor for a short time.
My parents and I had lunch at one of our favorite spots in town, then went for a bit of a drive. It was nice to get out of the house. I haven’t seen daylight in awhile, ha!
We were home for the rest of evening: We listened to America-themed music with a few SiriusXM stations, including Carrie Underwood’s Fourth of July countdown, which was fun. We barbecued hamburgers and watched the Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks from NYC, which is a staple. Normally, we watch the PBS special, too, but for some reason the channel went out and didn’t record. Which was a bummer! A few weeks ago, I’d also bought some patriotic glow in the dark bracelets, glasses and a headband. You know, just to really get in the spirit, if nothing else. Then, it was really a party.

Of course, it wasn’t exactly a calm evening. The illegal fireworks were booming all around our neighborhood which had Rory losing her mind — Which wasn’t her fault. I hate the loud booms, too. We put Rory in the cage for a little bit, and I turned some Adele on for her to drown out the booms and pops around us. Dad bought me some sparklers because they’re my favorite, so we went out around 10 p.m. when some of the noise died down. Sparklers are, unfortunately, not what they used to be — It took forever to get them to light and they burned out quickly. And then there was the occasional jump scare when the fireworks would pop right behind us or at the end of our street. It was a lot. And it was incredibly hot…So we went back inside, with one more box of sparklers left.

Friday was a lazy day. I read, watched TV, did a lot of nothing. It was the best. It was also the first full day I didn’t feel terrible. I took a nice, hot bubble bath that really helped me relax. And then, found a wild true crime style documentary on Hulu that BLEW MY MIND and reminded me why I should not get married, HA.
Later on, I FINALLY got Chick-Fil-A after far too long, and it hit just right. That kind of made my entire weekend right there.
That’s all for now,
Shelby
