Just another American Saturday Night with Brad Paisley at the Mid-State Fair
Saturday was my parents' 39th wedding anniversary, so I tagged along with them to the California Mid-State Fair in Paso Robles! We didn't leave until later in the afternoon, so we took our time getting ready and getting over to the coastal area.
We made a stop at Big Bubba's Bad BBQ across the street first. I had the pit beef sandwich which was yummy and filling.
We parked about two miles away from the fair and made our way into the fair. We walked through the exhibits but they were wall to wall with people and humid, sticky air. BLEH! We made our way around the fair through the food booths (there were a TON), around the animal area and back through the rides. We took a short break for a churro and water and gave me a chance to put a band-aid on my foot where a blister was developing. Then, we walked through some of the plant and flower competition exhibits.
They had some really picturesque spots near the front of the fair, so I took a few pictures of my parents and did a selfie of the three of us.
I woke up with a headache that morning and even though I'd taken medicine, the smoke from the BBQ all around us, was killing me. It goes straight to my sinuses and puts pressure everywhere. I was feeling really lousy, and I never know when these moments are going to hit. It just got worse as the evening went on!
We didn't ride any rides, so we were limited on what to do, but we made the most of it. I tried to pep up for the concert because I'd been looking forward to it for weeks. I haven't seen Brad in a few years so I was super happy to be going.
Around 7, we decided to head into the grandstands. It wasn't busy at all so we walked right in and got settled in for the show.
Matt Stell was the opener which I was so excited about. I love his hits on the radio and I've listened to his EP. Hearing him sing reminded me of why I fell in love with Nashville - That passion for the music and all that comes with it. I downloaded more of his music while we waited for Brad's set.
Brad puts on one heck of a show! He sang all of his hits, talked with the crowd and has incredible comedic timing — He even grabbed a girl's phone from her, posting selfies and scrolling through her past photos and including a few on Instagram. He's hilarious! And this is why I miss him and Carrie Underwood hosting the CMA Awards. It was a fun crowd and everyone was living in the moment (even if our phones were in front of our face for a lot of it). It was the perfect evening for a summer concert with the cooler breeze, the lights from the rides aglow and a full moon coming up over the mountain in front of us.
Some of those moments just feel like magic!
After the concert, we thought about grabbing something to eat at the fair, but I was feeling terrible and just wanted to get to the car. We waited near the Taco Bell while my dad ran back to get the car and picked us up a few minutes later. We tried multiple places to use the restroom and get food but a lot of the dining rooms were closed, so we drove a few miles up the road to the Jack in the Box. We used the restroom, grabbed food for the road and off we went. I was feeling so sick so I just got a small fry to have something on my stomach. When we were about 30 minutes out from home, I got so sick and threw up in a bag. It was the worst!
That's all for now,
Shelby
